Design Principles
Brand Consistency
All materials were designed in accordance with SFU's brand guidelines, ensuring a cohesive visual identity while supporting the unique communication needs of the Centre for Educational Excellence.
Clear Communication
Information was organized using strong hierarchy, concise messaging, and accessible layouts to help faculty quickly understand event details, services, and calls to action.
Flexible Design System
Layouts and graphic elements were designed to adapt across a wide range of formats—including posters, brochures, postcards, social media graphics, event calendars, and digital communications—while maintaining a consistent visual language.
Audience-Focused Design
Each piece was designed with busy faculty members in mind, presenting information in a way that was easy to scan and engaging across both physical and digital environments.
The Challenge
Support the Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE) in promoting workshops, events, and services through clear, engaging communications while maintaining consistency with Simon Fraser University's established brand guidelines. The work needed to accommodate a wide range of topics and audiences while remaining flexible across both print and digital formats.
The Goal
Develop a cohesive visual system that increased awareness of CEE's programs and services while providing a consistent experience across event promotions, marketing collateral, and digital communications. The designs needed to be adaptable, accessible, and easily recognizable within the SFU brand.
The Solution
I created a suite of marketing and communication materials—including workshop posters, brochures, postcards, social media graphics, event calendars, and promotional collateral using SFU's established visual identity as the foundation. By applying consistent typography, layout principles, and visual hierarchy across every touchpoint, I helped create a cohesive communications system that supported CEE's ongoing outreach and engagement efforts.
Reflection
What worked
Developing materials within an established design system created consistency across a diverse range of communications while allowing individual campaigns and events to maintain their own identity. Reusable layouts and design elements also supported efficient production of ongoing marketing materials without compromising quality.
Challenges
Balancing stakeholder preferences with SFU’s established brand guidelines was a key challenge. Each project required finding opportunities for creativity and engagement within institutional standards while ensuring communication objectives were met.
If this were expanded further
I would continue evolving the design system into a more comprehensive library of reusable templates and components, making it easier to scale communications across future campaigns while maintaining consistency. I would also expand the library of original photography by capturing faculty actively teaching and engaging with students, creating a richer selection of authentic imagery that better represents the Centre's work and the learning experience at SFU.
